Where will your dog be kept at night or when you are not supervising them? All my puppies/dogs have been crate trained but that doesn't mean they stay in the crate for extended periods of time but that crate represents their home away from home much like a security blanket in new surroundings.. Transitioning comes in steps. Also crate training is great for the car, a hotel room, a familar place if they have to stay at the vet's, etc.

A properly trained dog makes everyone happy plus training your dog is a great bonding experience. Have you found a place that you are comfortable training your dog at? We would suggest asking to sit in during a class. This will help you decide if you are a good match with this trainer/training facility.
